If you are thinking about trying therapy or counselling, you have come to the right place! This is a list of anxiety support services in Hertfordshire. We have included a range of different services so you can decide which you think will suit you best. Most people find having the right support makes the world of difference when you have anxiety, and we hope you start feeling more like yourself soon.

Support for Carers/Loved Ones of People with Mental Health Issues

Service provided by: Guideposts Trust

Description:

Groups for the carers and relatives of people with mental ill health. Groups allow members to offer each other mutual support and share their experience as carers, as well as having some light-hearted fun. In some sessions a guest speaker is invited to give information and knowledge to help with the caring role.

The groups provide a chance for carers to connect and support each other in a friendly environment, creating a safe secure space in which to share concerns, challenges, coping techniques, experience and knowledge. Joining a group of people in a similar situation to you can help you to feel less isolated. Groups are held in Watford, South Oxhey, and Borehamwood, with some groups available online.

One to One Support

Service provided by: Guideposts Trust

Description:

Guideposts Emotional Wellbeing Pathway (EWP) can help you come to terms with changes in your life, identify what’s not working, or things you want to achieve. Structured coaching can equip you with the skills and confidence you need to make changes and boost your mental health. This service is useful for those facing life changes such as becoming a carer, bereavement, and feelings of depression or anxiety.

EWP works with you to assess your emotional needs. One to one sessions with a wellbeing coach are available via phone, online, or face to face, depending on your needs. An action plan is designed with you to help you achieve this, and Guideposts can also advise you on other services that may help you.

Community Mental Health Services

Provided by: Guideposts Trust

Description:

Guideposts Trust is a charity with over 50 years experience in supporting people with mental health conditions. From their supportive community Hub in Watford, people facing mental ill health can receive expert support. Guideposts offer support in many different formats including group and social activities (art, football fan group, specialist women’s/men’s groups etc), physical activities, 1:1 support and crisis management, courses, outreach support, peer (client-led) support, and support for carers. Encompassing it all is a supportive community who will help you manage your mental health condition.

While the main hub is at Henry Smith House in Watford, there are also activities in Garston, Rickmansworth, Borehamwood, South Oxhey and Potters Bar. All support is carefully tailored to people’s individual needs and aspirations to enable you to manage your condition, reach recovery and build resilience. Guideposts uses the Star recovery model, where each individual sets goals jointly with their link worker during Star sessions.

Peer Support for Mental Health

Service provided by: Guideposts Trust

Description:

Guideposts Community Support and Connect provides short to medium term support for people who experience mental health issues, in South-west Hertfordshire.

Speaking to someone who has lived with their own mental health issues can be very helpful. Guideposts provide one-to-one peer support and support groups, aiming to aid recovery through increasing self-confidence, reducing social isolation, and giving emotional and practical support.

You will be matched with a either volunteer or another service user, who will support you in your recovery journey. The exact nature of support will vary from person to person and depends on what will help you the most. You and your ‘buddy’ can meet up one a fortnight, have weekly phone calls, and engage in local activities together. Your buddy can also help you with shopping, appointments, and other practical things.

Older People’s Mental Health Support

Service provided by: Herts Partnership Foundation Trust

Description:

The Older People’s Mental Health Service recognises that some illnesses, such as dementia, are more common in this age group. This service takes the unique needs of older people into account, and provides community, crisis, and inpatient care. It can help people aged 65+. Most referrals are made by a GP, but you can also self-refer by contacting 0800 6444 101.

Young People’s Support (aged 12-15)

Description:

If you’re aged 12-15 and struggling with anxiety or low-mood, the Services for Young People North Herts Wellbeing project could be just what you are looking for. The project is free and runs during school term time and each term you can cover a variety of subjects and activities which will help you through the challenges and pressures you are facing in your life. You can learn how look after your own emotional and mental wellbeing and improve your self-esteem and confidence levels.

You can get involved in a range of great activities, including sports and arts & crafts, and learn more about coping strategies and new life-skills. Ultimately, the project will help you to feel better about your life and your future.

The activities and topical discussions are run by supportive, qualified and experienced Services for Young People youth workers. The project is open to everyone aged 12–15 in North Herts who would like support with their emotional well-being.

‘Supporting You’ is a group programme of seven weekly sessions where you learn strategies to help you to reduce stress, anxiety and low mood in a fun and safe environment. The programme gives you the tools to build resilience and maintain positive emotional wellbeing. It is for ages 11-17 and there is no cost.

You will also have opportunities to work towards sectional certificates of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. All the activities are run by supportive youth workers. You can get involved in discussions on a variety of subjects and the project will help you to increase your self-esteem, assertiveness and confidence and enable you to have a safe space to work through issues and barriers.
