Our Space – a Thriving Community in Chipping Norton
Once a month in the beautiful Cotswolds town of Chipping Norton, a thriving community meet up for fun, activities, and a place they can be themselves.
This social group, called “Our Space” is an inclusive evening arranged by Guideposts volunteers, for adults with disabilities and related conditions.
As the name implies, the evening’s activities are shaped by the people who attend. The sessions usually have a theme: pizza parties and quiz nights are popular features. Music and dancing are also a big hit, so there are events like karaoke, line dancing, and even an ABBA night coming up – watch out for the dancing queens and super troupers hitting town!
There is always a craft table, board games, and refreshments with hot and cold drinks available, so there’s something for everyone whether you want to join in with the main group activity or chill out in a smaller group.
Steph, team leader of Guideposts services at The Albion in Chipping Norton, said
“Going to the pub or to a social night out can be intimidating or inaccessible to many of the people who come along.
This evening gives people a great, fun social night out, and the opportunity to meet and make friends, in a safe and supportive environment. We are so glad that Our Space and our amazing team of volunteers provide that opportunity.”
The group started in 2022, driven by requests by service users at The Albion, Guideposts’ day opportunities service in Chipping Norton.
We will be celebrating our 2nd anniversary in August. It’s proved incredibly popular with about 25 people coming along each month, making a really vibrant buzz of social activity.
New members are always welcome to come along. The group is particularly arranged for adults with learning disabilities and associated physical disabilities, autism, or mental health support needs. Anyone with care needs is asked to bring their own support.
Members of The Albion are regulars, as well as many others who enjoy this thriving community.
One member said “Everyone here is really nice. I can unmask and just be myself.“
