Dementia Carers Group

Dementia Carers Group

Our virtual Dementia Carers Group is a monthly support group running over Zoom.

Each month we invite a speaker to share their knowledge on a particular aspect of dementia. Everyone has the chance to ask questions and share their ideas – after all, we are all experts by experience.

Current Status: Taking place online every month.

How the Dementia Carers Group works

We meet every first Thursday of the month, via Zoom.

Guest speakers share their knowledge on a particular aspect of dementia, followed by a chance to ask questions and for everyone to share their ideas.

You can expect information and support from Guideposts staff and other carers as well as friendliness and humour too!

Who are the speakers?

We welcome a wide range of speakers. Since we started in July 2020, our talks have included:

  • Nula Suchet, author of “The Longest Farewell”
  • Hilary Waiter BMus, Med, DipMTh, Dip Psychotherapy: Communication through Touch and Music
  • Amanda Stratford, Head Occupational Therapist, Hertfordshire Partnership University
  • John Killick:  Caring – Tell it like it is
  • June Hennell MBE, advocate for excellence in dementia care
  • Shamim Kholwadia: Dementia across Cultures and Ethnicities
  • Laurence Geller CBE: Dementia – Care, but not a Cure.

Who can we support?

The Dementia Carers Group is open to anyone who plays a caring role for someone with dementia – as well as anyone who is interested in learning more about the condition.

You don’t have to be an existing user of Guideposts to join us – just request your place at the next meeting by using the form at the bottom. You don’t even have to live in the UK. In fact we’ve welcomed someone all the way from windy Chicago!

Telecare: Technology to help the Carer

Our guest this month will look at ways that technology can help people to retain their independence and confidence when they are at home alone. For carers this may be having the peace of mind that they will be alerted if something happens where help is needed.

We look forward to an interesting and lively discussion.
