Volunteer for OpenMine – an autism-friendly Minecraft server
About the project
The Guideposts Better Connected project provides social opportunities for people with autism and Asperger’s through a range of online groups, which can be joined from anywhere in the UK.
Our members have found the groups a valuable way to meet new people and explore common interests – all in a safe and friendly environment.
We’re looking for people who love playing Minecraft to help us run a dedicated server for players with autism and Asperger’s called OpenMine. The mission is to create a space where those who are not “neurotypical” can feel welcomed, and understood, and be themselves, while enjoying the wonderful world of Minecraft!
OpenMine will be open to anyone over the age of 16+ with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or Asperger’s. Players will be able log in any time, or join in one of our “play together” sessions and chat over Discord.
How you can help
There are lots of ways you can help out on the server:
- Builders help us craft the world of OpenMine, create mini-games and shared community spaces, and lead on group building projects
- Moderators help to keep OpenMine a friendly and welcoming space by enforcing community rules and dealing with griefers or players thieves!
- Session leaders help run the “play together” sessions over Discord
- Buddies provide support to new players, showing them round the world, introducing them to other players, and answering any questions they have about playing the game
This role is ideal for you if:
- you are passionate about Minecraft
- you have experience working with or supporting people with autism/Asperger’s
- you would like to use your skills and creativity to make a difference
As part of the Guideposts team you will receive a full volunteer induction and personalised training to your needs. No personal care is involved and any out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed.
