10 Tips to Support Your Mental Health

Small changes that can make a big difference to your wellbeing.

This week marks Mental Health Awareness Week, an important opportunity to raise awareness, encourage conversations and remind people that mental health matters every single day.

Good mental health doesn’t always come from making big changes. Often, small daily habits and meaningful connections can make a real difference to how we feel. Whether you’re supporting yourself, a friend, a colleague or a family member, taking time to prioritise wellbeing is important.

Here are 10 simple tips that can help support positive mental health and wellbeing.

1. Stay Connected
Talking to friends, family, colleagues or members of your community can help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. Even a quick check-in or conversation can brighten someone’s day.

2. Take Regular Breaks
It’s easy to become overwhelmed when life feels busy. Taking short breaks throughout the day can help clear your mind, improve focus and reduce stress.

3. Spend Time Outdoors
Fresh air, daylight and nature can have a positive impact on mental wellbeing. A short walk, time in the garden or simply stepping outside for a few minutes can help reset your mind.

4. Prioritise Sleep
Sleep plays a vital role in both physical and mental health. Creating a regular bedtime routine and allowing yourself time to rest can improve mood, energy and concentration.

5. Talk About How You Feel
Opening up can feel difficult, but speaking honestly about emotions and challenges can help relieve pressure and remind us that we are not alone.

6. Limit Screen Time
Constant notifications, social media and news updates can sometimes feel overwhelming. Taking breaks from screens and digital distractions can help create balance.

7. Celebrate Small Wins
Not every achievement has to be huge. Completing everyday tasks, making progress or simply getting through a difficult day are all things worth recognising.

8. Keep Active
Movement can boost mood and reduce stress. Whether it’s walking, stretching, exercising or playing sport, staying active can support both mental and physical wellbeing.

9. Ask for Help When You Need It
Reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Speaking to someone you trust or accessing professional support can make a big difference.

10. Be Kind to Yourself
Everyone has difficult days. Try to speak to yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer to someone else.

Mental Health Matters Every Week

While Mental Health Awareness Week shines a spotlight on wellbeing, mental health is something we should continue talking about and supporting all year round.
Connection, community and compassion can make a real difference. By looking after ourselves and supporting one another, we can help create healthier, more understanding communities for everyone.
