Work Training Scheme

Work Training Scheme

Guideposts work training scheme gives adults with learning difficulties access to retail, customer service and employability work training to help them gain skills that they can transfer to the world of work.

The programme is tailor-made to each individual by our experienced staff, and delivered principally in our friendly shop environment.

Current Status: We are currently closed due to Covid-19 restrictions. Please visit us when we re-open.

How the Work Training Scheme works

Trainees work in our beautiful community shop, part of Guideposts’ Cross Street Community Hub in Ware. The shop sells carefully selected food, drinks and unique art work including items made or grown by the students themselves.

The trainees actively take part in decisions about the layout and stock, handle the merchandise, and serve customers. The team with our staff and volunteers have plenty of fun, ensuring that the shop is a welcoming and friendly place to come to.

We have also held pop-up shops in the Ware community venues, at local supermarkets and pop-up coffee shop events when the trainees’ skills are developed in a less familiar environment.

What activities are on offer?

You could do any of the tasks for the shop, for example:

  • Serving customers, using the till and practising your communication skills
  • Dressing windows, making stock displays, and pricing to learn about sales and marketing
  • Travel training
  • Making gifts to sell – a chance to get creative
  • Gardening to grow potential merchandise, to get to know the whole process from producer to retailer.
