Ware Community Activity Scheme

Ware Community Activity Scheme

Our Community Activity Scheme supports adults with learning disabilities to increase their independence, taking part in evening activities in small friendship groups in the local community in and around Ware.

Funded by Hertfordshire County Council

Current Status: We are looking forward to seeing people face-to-face again, with plans for community-based activities from 1 April.

How the Community Activity Scheme works

We form small social groups of 3 or 4 people to meet fortnightly and take part in social activities and form friendships, with the support of Guideposts staff. With time, some of our groups become confident and independent enough to meet up on their own without the support from Guideposts.

The participants’ carers gain a much needed, regular respite break, perhaps to attend an evening class or to catch up with their own needs.

In the holidays we arrange days out, weekend breaks and holidays to enable people who haven’t had the chance before to take an independent holiday without their carers.

What activities are on offer?

Our activities are decided amongst each social group and can include:

  • Going out for a meal
  • Going to the cinema
  • Going bowling
  • Going swimming
  • Attending a class such as dance or exercise

Who can we support?

We support any adults who have a learning disability who want to develop their confidence and social skills. Our staff are also trained to work with a range of additional needs, including sight, hearing and mobility problems.

Why should I join?

Joining the Community Activity Scheme will help you to get more involved in your local area’s community, discovering different activities and having fun. You can discover greater independence by going out without your family or carers, while also giving them a well-earned break. By going out regularly you can get more active, and also become part of a friendship group.
