Guideposts in Watford

In 1972 Guideposts Trust was established to provide alternatives to institutions housing people with mental health problems and learning disabilities. Guideposts began its work in Hertfordshire in 1992, opening its first Day Centre in Watford, Henry Smith House, for people with long-term mental health issues.

Designed as a non-institutional home-like environment, Henry Smith House offers an extensive programme of social, leisure, and skills development opportunities, as well as long-term emotional and practical support.

Guideposts has also established a range of ancillary services in SW Hertfordshire including:

  • Taking the service developed at Henry Smith House to other towns through outreach groups
  • a 1:1 befriending scheme to help reduce loneliness and isolation
  • Dedicated carers support services, offering much-valued respite, as well as practical, emotional and peer support for people caring for those with mental health challenges.

Today, Guideposts supports nearly 1,000 people across the UK. Although the way we deliver our work has changed over the years, the ethos remains the same.

All of our work is focused on helping people overcome social inequalities, improve their wellbeing and live the best life possible. We do this by enabling them build on their strengths, maintain their independence, achieve their aspirations, and develop supportive connections in their local community.
